  • 2,9 million inhabitants in the Lisbon area (509,614 thousand of them based in town).

  • 4 million guests a year, more than half of whom come from foreign markets, particularly Spain, France, Brazil, Germany, the United Kingdom and the United States of America.

  • More than ¼ of the city’s resident population has higher education qualifications.

  • In 2020, the Lisbon Metropolitan Area (AML) enrolled around 153,000 students in higher education. Every year more than 31,000 people obtain their higher education diploma, with particular emphasis on the areas of Business, Health, Engineering and Social and Behavioural Sciences, which account for more than 58% of these diplomas.

  • Lisbon has attracted a significant number of international students to higher education, with more than 18,000 students in the 2020/2021 academic year.

  • 91 higher education establishments and polytechnics (public and private) in the Lisbon Region.

  • 140 research centres.

  • 3 science and technology parks in the region (Lispolis, Taguspark and Madanpark).
